Toyota Motor Corporation has developed a new 6-speed
automatic transmission (U660E) for the front-wheel drive
vehicles and large displacement engines. The U660 E
was adapted to achieve improved environmental protection, and meet safety standards, which are large concerns for the society and customer satisfaction, by
being small, light, highly efficient, quick response, and
high shift quality. Toyota fundamentally improved both the hardware and software of the control system to meet
these important goals.
INTRODUCTION
Global warming coupled with the sudden rise in crude oil
prices and crude oil resources are of growing concern. A trend among automobile manufacturers has been to improve fuel economy, addressing concerns with crude
oil resources. The movement among each automotive
manufacturer has developed multi-speed automatic transmissions and continues to make advances in
technology. Toyota Motor Corporation developed a six-
speed automatic transaxle for front-wheel drive vehicles. Even with severe space limitations, Toyota achieved not only fuel economy improvement, but also good drivability
for luxury vehicles. Furthermore, a new production
system improved the initial quality. This paper describes the control system in the 6-speed automatic transaxle.
DEVELOPMENT OBJECTIVES
The development objectives of the control system for the
6-speed automatic transaxle are as follows:
1. Developed small hydraulic control device (valve
body) to achieve world top-level.
2. Achieve quick response and high quality shift
characteristics.
3. Improved fuel economy
4. Improved initial quality Table 1: Technical Data of the U660E
