Sincemostofthemajorcom­ ponents arenewdesigns, acomprehensive test program wascompleted priortoproduction. Thispaperdescribes the785Truck. several ofitsengineering features, andthedevelop­ mentprogramitunderwent.INSEPTE}ffiER 19B4,Caterpillar Tractor Co. beganproduction ofanew, mechanical-drive, off-highway truck. IthasaSalesModelNum­ berof785andissizedinthe130/150 ton class. Inthisclass,itwillcompete witha numberofothermechanical andelectric drive trucks -although itspowertraindesigngoal wasperformance equaltothe85tonclass. Itwasintroduced inmid-1980 andiscurrently used inelectric generating sets, non-Caterpillar off-highway trucks, andmarine orindustrial powerapplications ata895kw (1200hp)setting.
