THE PRESSING NEED FOR ADDITIONAL COAL and ore
combined with theinflationary trends ofrecent
years hascaused themining andconstructionindustries' need forreliable high performing
haulage units.
Inmid 1974, Dart management made the
decision tomeet theindustry need. Areview
ofthecustomer's concepts ofoperation andour
evaluation tosatisfy thetruck hauling
requirements evolved into twomodel trucks. Thetrucks, anend dump and atractor-trailer, each
with the same basic prime mover, permit theflexibility ofapplication tocustomer needs.
Ourbackground, experience andknowledge
ofreliable, proven components lead usinto
selecting a1,000 horsepower mechanical drive
power train. Thepurpose ofthis paper istodescribe this power train anditsapplication
tothebasic chassis inattaining thedesign
objectives.
OBJECTIVES
Engineering wasassigned thetruckproject which included designing, assisting inmanufacture andtesting within one(1)year.
Ourmany years oftruck experience assistedusinourdesign objectives oftrucks with:
1.Reliability2. Performance3. Customer acceptance
Thecompleted trucks, Model 3100 -100
tonend dump and Model 4150 -150tonbottom
dump tractor-trailer, arepictured infigures
one(1)and two(2).
BASIC TRACTOR
Thebasic tractor isequipped with singlefront tires and dual rear tires. The 190"
wheel base with wide track axles provides a
dynamically stable vehicle fortheoff-highway
road conditions. Itispowered bytoday's
reliable 1,000 horsepower engines, thelargest
proven mechanical power shift transmission
and atriple reduction drive axle, resulting
intheperformance efficiency ofa4X2drive.
All components selected were proven field
reliable andthose ofnewdesign were engineer
ingtested. Theadditional advantages ofdriver comfort, routine service andmaintenance

into onebasic chassis that isutilized asa
twoaxle end dump at100tonand athree axletractor-trailer at150 ton.
Astraight-forward approach and asimplified design vehicle wasengineered andtested under controlled laboratory conditionsandalso customer conditions.
Thevehicle axles andchassis will also
accomodate thenewer tire options that are
being offered inthis basic size truck.
Dart's purpose with these trucks istooffer themining industry alowcost perton
mile vehicle.

POWER TRAIN
Theengines selected aretheDetroit
Diesel 12V-149T (1,000 gross horsepower) and
the Cummins KTA2300C-1050 (1,050 gross horsepower). Both areturbo-charged andhave
logged many hours offield operation.
Theengine package ismodule mounted forefficient servicing andoverhaul asillustrated
infigure three (3). Theengine temperatureiscontrolled with a60"diameter suction
fanand a29square foot frontal area radiator
with bolted attachment topandbottom tanks.
Constant engine temperature ismaintained
through theuseofradiator shutters anda
molded fiberglass fanshroud forair flow
efficiency. Thetoptank, with deaerating
capability, includes sufficient drawndown
volume forroutine water level maintenance.
Located below theradiator bottom tank
isatorque converter-retarder shell andtube
heat exchanger forefficient cooling ofthetransmission fluid.
Theengine intake airpasses through two
(2)Donaldson Model SRG-20 aircleaners
mount
