THISPAPERdescribes therequirements of thedesignanddevelopment ofanewautomatic transmission fortransverse engine"East-West" poweredvehicles. Withtheadventoflegislated fuelecon omythetrendtowardsmaller andlightercars hasbeenaccelerated. Thischangehascaused theautomotive industry totakeafreshlook atthewholecarandinparticular, engines andtransmissions asrelatedtotheirappli cationtomaintain acceptable performance levels,fueleconomyrequirements andstill provide thecustomer withanadequateinter iorspace. Theserestraints havedemanded maximumutilization ofspaceandfromthisis emerging anewbreedoffrontwheeldrive vehicles. Duringtheearlyvehicle designstages various arrangements offrontwheeldrive powerplants wereexamined. Thearrangement showninFigure 1wasselected foritsover allflexibility providing:1.Easeofadaptating todifferent engines andvehicles.2.Awiderangeofoverall topgear ratios.3.Easyremoval fromvehicle for service.4.Compactsizeandweight. Overall length389mm. In-carweight71.7Kgincludes, converter driveplate,fasteners andoilfill. Themodelyeartimingfortheintroduc tionofthenew"Omni-Horizon" carline created anadditional challenge: todesign, develop andtoolthenewautomatic transmis sioninathreeyeartimeframe. Sincetime wasoftheessenceitwasdecided thatthe designwouldbeconfined toconventional construction, butwherepossible, makeprovi sionfortheincorporation oftheever-growing engineered stamping technology atalaterdate. Theobjectives forthedesignwere: .Provideatleastthreeforward speeds. .Havecapacity andflexibility to handleanenginerangefrom1.4liter to2.6liter. .Provide agoodrangeofoverall top gearratioswithminimummanufacturing complexities. .DesigntoMetricStandards -Thenew "Omni-Horizon" carlinewasdesigned metricandrepresented agiantstep fortheCorporation initsprevious commitment tometricchangeover. ABSTRACT Anewthree-speed automatic transmission hasbeendesigned, developed andisbeingpro ducedintheU.S.bytheChrysler Corporation foritsnewfamilyoffrontwheeldriveveh icles. Thetransmission wasdesigned around theChrysler-proven TorqueFlite concept. Thefeatures ofthenewtransmission include a"folded" construction forinstallation ina transverse powertrain. Thecaseisaone piecealuminumdiecasthousingandcontains thefinaldriveanddifferential unit.
