ABSTRACT
The Future Heavy Tactical Truck (FHTT) project is a
preliminary look at the capabilities of a heavy classtactical vehicle designed from the ground up whichintegrates both commercial and military combattechnologies. The program objective was to provideconcept designs and analysis to assess the performancecapabilities of a new truck and to establish a technologybase program to support future truck innovations. Twovehicle concept designs were developed. Concept Oneis a “high tech” version, which would incorporate themost advanced technologies and designs available andthe second version, Concept Two, is a scaled backversion based on performance and cost tradeoffs.
Based
on the results of these efforts, the Army has establishedan applied research program creating a partnership ofAdvanced Concepts and National Automotive Centerengineers and scientists to conceive the Army’s plan forits heavy, medium and light class trucks of the future.
INTRODUCTION
The Future Heavy Tactical Truck (FHTT) project is apreliminary look at the capabilities of a heavy classtactical vehicle designed from the ground up. Futurecommercial and military requirements are diverging.Commercial trucks are stressing more stringent highwaystandards while the military needs greater performanceto keep up with the pace of battle. The current tacticalwheeled vehicle development process relies on the Armyprocuring commercial trucks that don’t fully meet thefuture force requirements. Up front planning is requiredto arrive at the optimum mix of commercial and militarycomponents for vehicles in the future Tactical WheeledVehicle (TWV) fleet. This leap-ahead capability, enablingfast paced logistics support to the new lightweight forceas well as significant life saving benefits, has to beweighed against the additional costs to the Army.Promising technologies considered includehydropneumatic suspension, modular armor packages, advanced lightweight structural materials and armors, defensive aids suite, active protection, and robotics.Performance technology candidates under considerationinclude: hybrid electric drive (leveraging DARPA’s HybridElectric Power Program), hydropneumatic suspensions,
advanced engines
