In1970,thecurrentAT-MT-HT fami­ lyofautomatic transmissions wasintroduced, andhassince beensuccessfully appliedworldwide. Thisworldwide experi­ encehaspavedthewayforanewlineofautomatic transmis­ sions,theWT. Replacing thecurrentAT-MT-HT hasbeenachallenge. Thesetransmissions covertherangeofmedium/heavy trucks upto59000Kg(130000lb)GVWand332Kw(445HP).They havegainedareputation forqualityanddurability inapplica­ tionsrangingfromschoolbussestoheavyequipment haulers. Toreplacesuchasuccessful productlinehasrequiredacareful studyofthemarket. Thesestudiesstartedinformally in1982.By1984and1985 surveyswerebeingconducted inNorthAmerica, Europeand Japan.Thishasbeenacontinuing processandasthedesign progressed itwasreviewed withcustomers toobtaintheir latestthinking. Figure1showsthebasicmarl<ettrendsas perceived byAllisoncustomers. Firstandaboveallothers camethemessage thattheoptionpriceofaheavydutyAnewlineofon-highway transmissions hasbeendesigned anddeveloped byAllisonTransmission Division. Thisnew productline,identified astheWorldTransmission Series(WT), hasbeendesigned withemphasis oncost-effectiveness, great­ erintegration withvehiclesystemsandadvanced technology to meetmarketdemands intothe21stcentury. Newdesignconcepts bothinpowertraincomponent ar­ rangement andelectronic controlshavebeencoupledutilizing concurrent engineering andsystems engineering principles. Theresultisacustomer-driven product linewhich,when produced byAllison,willexceedworldclassstandards of quality,performance andvalue.
