Barnes Goshen Rubber Co., Inc. Automatic Thnsmission Fluids (A?Fs) are being changed due to the more severe operating conditions and the need for a "life of the car" fluid. These changes in the ATFs can have a very negative effect on some traditional elastomeric materials and leave others unaffected. The purpose of this paper is to characterize elastomeric materials in the new Automatic Transmission Fluids (ATFs). Newer ATFs are needed due to the more severe conditions in the transmission, and a demand exists for a "life of the car" fluid to eliminate drain intervals under normal operating conditions. The need to eliminate -or reduce drain intervals is due to the enviromental concerns about the disposal of the used fluids. To make the fluids more heat resistant and longer lasting, different chemical additives are used. These additives can be aggressive toward most elastomeric sealing materials. The additives that have the most severe effect on elastomeric compounds are the aromatic amines used as antioxidants and the methoxylated amines used for friction reduction.
