ABSTRACT
There has been a growing need to develop
more compact automatic transmissions with a greater
number of speeds for better fuel economy and better
driveability. This study investigated a method for
determining suitable planetary gear trains for today's
transmissions. A computer program has been
developed for application to five-speed transmissions
consisting of two planetary gearsets. By analyzing
various gear train possibilities, the program can identify
which gearsets are suitable for different conditions,
including the number of speeds, the number of
binding elements, topological suitability and other
factors.
1. ANALYTICAL THEORY
A planetary gear train, consisting of N number of
planetary gearsets, can have different gear system
configurations depending on how engagement of the
rotating elements is accomplished. The rotating ele-
ments referred to here include the sun gear, carrier and
ring gear of each planetary gearset, as well as the input
and output shafts and case. Two types of engagement
can be considered - ordinary engagement and discon-
tinuous engagement through the action of the binding
elements, i.e., clutches and brakes. Since two types
of engagement are possible for each combination of 3
