Printed in USADownloaded from SAE International by University of New South Wales, Saturday, September 15, 2018x x xABSTRACT The new light-duty hybrid truck developed by Hino Motors, Ltd. completely redesigned the traction motor, the inverter and the traction battery, which maximizeoutput and efficiency. It also succeeds in balancing low fuel economy and low exhaust emissions by utilizing a combination of a new hybrid system control withspecially developed diesel engine. INTRODUCTION Hino Motors, Ltd. initiated development of parallel hybrid system in 1981, in Japan, since the parallel hybrid system was recognized as having potentials to reduce exhaust emissions and fuel consumption. After years of the development, we were finally able to put the hybridroute bus into practical use for the first time in the world in 1991. Afterwards, the medium-duty hybrid truck andthe large sightseeing hybrid bus were launched in themarket. Then, in November 2003, the hybrid LDT (LDT:Light-duty Truck) came to the market. This hybrid LDT attracted attentions from transportation and convenience store industries who were increasingly keen to reducetheir own environmental effects, and was sold more than 3,000 within 3 years. Figure 1: The New Light-duty Hybrid This article introduces the hybrid system control andsummaries of the hybrid system units which were upgraded during the latest development. Figure 1 showsan external view of the new hybrid LDT, and Table 1 shows specifications. DEVELOPMENT OF THE HYBRID SYSTEM In October 2005, the New Long-Term Diesel EmissionsRegulations was enforced in Japan. We took up a new development project for the traction motor, the inverter, the traction battery, which were main components of the hybrid system to meet the regulation standards, and released the new hybrid LDT in October 2006.TARGETS OF DEVELOPMENT Our goals of the development were to achieve lower pollution level and higher mileage performance, while keeping costs low to promote the spread of low emission vehicles. Targets of development are shown below. Table 1: Specifications of the New H ybrid Improvement of fuel economy: More than 30% improvement c
