The method is based on impressing of a ball, made of steel or hard alloy, into a sample (or article) under effect of a force, applied perpendicularly to the sample's surface within certain time interval, and measurement of imprint diameter after removal of the force. This Standard fully complies with CMEA Standard 468-77. Definitions and designations are specified in Appendix 1. (Amended Wording, Amendment No. 5). Sample thickness S shall exceed the imprint depth h no less than 8 times and shall be calculated using the formula: 0.102.F S≥8 (when F is expressed in N) πDHB(HBW) F S≥8 (when F is expressed in kgf) πDHB(HBW) Minimal sample's thickness shall be determined in accordance with Appendix 2. 1.2. Sample's surface shall be flat and smooth Surface roughness of a sample (or platform on a product) Ra shall be of no more than 2.5 microns in accordance with GOST 2789-73, unless otherwise is indicated in specifications and technical documentation for metal products. 1.3. A sample shall be prepared so that metal properties does not change as a result of mechanical or other processing, for example heating or hardening. Section 1 (Amended Wording, Amendment No. 5). Section 2 (Removed, Amendment No. 5). 2. PREPARATION FOR TESTING 2.1. The surface of a sample or tested product shall be plane, smooth and free from oxide film. When preparing the sample surface it is necessary to take measures, eliminating the change of metal properties as a result of heating or hardening. Processing of a sample (product) surface may be carried out by polishing or with aid of fine file. If hardness is determined with aid of a ball 1 mm in diameter the sample surface shall be polished. 2.2. The thickness of tested sample (product) shall be chosen so that there are no visible traces of deformation on the opposite side of the sample after testing. 3. EQUIPMENT 3.1. The device for hardness measurement shall be in accordance with GOST 23677-79. (Amended Wording, Amendment No. 4). 3.2. Steel ball of 10.0; 5.0; 2.5; 2.0 or 1.0 mm in diameter shall have hardness of no0 less than 850 HV10; 2 FOCT 9012-89 A ball made from hard alloy of 10.0; 5.0; 2.5: 2.0 or 1.0 mm in diameter shall have hardness of no less than 1 500 HV10. Maximum deviations of ball diameter from the nominal one are specified in table 1a.
