ABSTRACT
As a direct result of the raining industries
need to improve efficiency and production in
open pit type operations, the size of dump trucks
has increased. In addition, the increase in
vertical lift and resultant grades, and the in
crease in hauling distances are making the demand
for mechanical drive dump trucks. With these
mining requirements, we have developed the me
chanical automatic transmission, controlled by
microprocessor, with 8 forward speeds and 1 re
verse speed, which suit 120 mton class dump
trucks and 160 mton class dump trucks. This
paper shows the design concept and progress
made in development of these transmissions.
1. DEMAND FOR MECHANICAL DRIVE DUMP TRUCKS
(1) Demand in deep pit operations.

The vertical lift is increasing in open pit
mining. In general, deep pit mines cover a
range of 100 ^BOOm in vertical lift. In
these deep pit mines, to reduce the construction
costs of truck roads, the grade must be in
creased. In this case the electric drive
systems have an overheating problem. The durability of electric drive systems is greatly
affected by temperature. The life of insul
ating material may be reduced by half with each
rise in temperature by 10° c.
