tedbythecombustion gasesduringtheperiodic
combustion process, aretransmitted tothe
driveline andthereleadtovibration andnoise.
Since1985, BMWhasbeenusingitstwo-mass fly
wheelan certain gasoline anddiesel engines.
Thisisamechanical low-pass filter, which
largely isolates rotational irregularities and
vibration fromthecomplete drivelineandthere
forereduces thenois8levelinsidethevehicle.
Running speedssignificantly exceeding 5000rpm
however causeasevereincrease inwearonthe
internal components ofthetorsional vibration
damper, asaconsequence ofthehighercentri
.fugalforces. Foruseofthetwo-mass flywheel
atveryhighengine speeds, moresatisfactory
tribological conditions havetherefore tobe
created. Closed systems filled withamedium
withasimultaneous lUbricating anddamping
effect arecurrently beinginvestigated, and
testresults sofarhavebeenpromising.
INTHEORIVELINE OFANAUTOMOBILE itispossible
toidentify agreatmanymodesofvibration with
differing frequencies andamplitudes, depending
onload,speedandtheselected gearratio. On
vehicles withaconventional driveline incorpo
rating amanual gearbox, thetorsional vibra
tionsofthesecond orthirdorderoriginating
fromtheengine, inotherwordsthoserelated to
theignition frequency offour-orsix-cylinder
engines, areparticularly predominant anddis
turbin
