ABSTRACT
Brazing using arc-sprayed coatings was
investigated for appl i cat ion to non-oxidat i on
copper brazing. It was found that the more
porous sprayed coatings have an excel lent
brazeabi I i ty. This newly deve I oped joining
method is more suitable than conventional
methods for brazing complicated parts. We have
appl ied this method to fabricate a torque
converter for practical use.
INTRODUCTION
Brazing
is now applied to a wide variety
of automotive parts, from smaller parts to
larger ones such as heat exchangers. Among al l
brazing methods, non-oxidation copper brazing
is popular since this brazing method does not
require flux.
One of the typical automotive Parts join-
ed by this method is the pump impeller of a
hydraulic torque converter for an automatic
transmission. There, a number of blades are
joined by non-oxidation copper brazins.
A typical brazing method for these blades
is preplaced brazing. In preplaced brazing, a
brazing f i l ler copper metal is preformed to
copy the blade outline, or a paste copper
brazing metal is set on the top en
