ABSTRACT
Driveline clunk is a phenomenon that can adversely
affect customer perception of vehicle quality. Clunk iscreated by the impact of two driveline components asthey oscillate in response to a torque disturbance in thedriveline system. This disturbance is typically initiatedby a driver controlled engine torque variation, mostseverely through a throttle or clutch manipulation. Thistorque variation excites a torsional response from thedriveline, manifested by a variety of mechanisms suchas resonances of various shafts, housings and axles, clutch oscillations, and gear impacts. Becauseautomotive drivelines are complex systems composedof many rotating components, difficulty arises inidentifying the impacts that cause clunk and evaluatingthe significant parameters that can positively affectthese collisions.
This paper will describe the application of analysis and
test methods in the investigation of clunk in a rear wheeldrive, manual transmission vehicle. The interactionbetween analysis and test methods to designappropriate tests to isol
