ABSTRACT
In order to improve fuel efficiency, reduce the logistical
footprint, generate power, and lighten vehicles the Army must transform its fleet of vehicles. One path is using hybrid electric vehicles. The National Automotive Center (NAC) and Electricore Inc. are currently engaged in a cooperative development program to demonstrate the potential of Allison Transmission’s sec ond-
generation parallel hybrid electric drive EP-50 System in heavy vehicles. The objective of this particular program is to demonstrate the suitability of the EP-50 system, designed for inter-city bus applications, in a Light Armored Vehicle-III/ Interim Armored Vehicle (LAV III) and a Mack refuse hauler.
This paper w ill describe how hybrid electric pr opulsion is
a dual use technology, benefiting both the government
and commercial industries. The US Army is in need of technologies that decrease emissions, increase fuel efficiency, and decrease operating costs, while at the same time, the commercial sectors are looking for new platforms and ways to reduce production costs. A joint venture between government and industry can satisfy both their needs and reduce overall costs.
INTRODUCTION
Fuel supplies for our ground forces constitute about 70% of the bulk tonnage moved to support a deployed unit. The US Army carries over 246,000 vehicles in their fleet of tactical vehicles to insure the proper support of the deployed units. It is the intent of the Army to alleviate some of this burden by investigating technologies that reduce the Army’s dependency on fuel resupply by 75%. Hybrid technology is one way to reduce the amount of fuel used.
The Tank-Automotive Research Development
Engineering Center (TARDEC) and the NAC have many hybrid electric drive programs. The NAC’s Wheel and Track Systems team is currently conducting three different hybrid electric programs for medium weight vehicles (14-20 tons). The main goal of the Wheel and Track Systems team is to look at a variety of hybrid technologies, on different platforms, which could be candidates for m ilitary gr ound vehicles. The current
active demonstration programs include two series and one parallel electric drive propulsion system.
One program is an effort between
